托福真题 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Although science and technology will continue to improve, the most significant improvements for the quality of people’s lives have already taken place. Use specific reasons and relevant examples or details to support your opinion.
is not always good if science and technology cannot bring the overall
well-being for individuals and societies. The major challenge facing the
world in the 21st century must focus on how to improve people’s quality
of life on all fronts. Vividly at sight are two major wars: to fight
poverty and to fight pollution at the same time.
The war on poverty has won many battles without winning the war. Today, the desperate people’s living conditions should be upgraded since poverty may only be defined as a low quality of life. Thanks to the recent scientific and technological innovations, more and more people are coming out of extreme poverty. However, so far not enough has been done to meet the demand of the growing global population. For example, in some parts of the world, scenes of lack of food, shelter, and access to education, healthcare, or employment are widely seen, hopefully awaiting a difference to happen. It is clear, then, that poverty as such is one of the critical targets which those heroes of science and technology need to attack, and that as quickly as they can.
On another front, the enemy of humanity is pollution--air, water, soil, which has been affecting the global environment to such an extent that no time should be lost to avert the situation. This being the case, fighters in the scientific and technological sectors should join forces with governments and organizations at all levels to declare a total war against pollution, while improving people’s quality of life without wrecking the environment. Paradoxically, human beings have reasons to be happy about the many significant achievements that have taken place, only to find that they are victims of their own success. So, doubts arise. Is pollution the price to be paid for progress? Can the global economy be developed with sustainability? One thing, however, is sure: a polluted environment is a low quality of life and is not something to be proud of, but is a serious issue to be tackled.
In conclusion, as a strategy to bring a better quality of life for all people, it behooves those modern heroes to create brand-new ideas to defeat at once poverty and pollution. Although science and technology will continue to improve, progress must always keep steps with the well-being of humanity. Otherwise, progress is not always good.
